CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Alvara continued. “We were instructed to bring these samples to you, provide a generalized description of what we know of these creatures and what we do not know, and ask the Havalon Clan to provide any opinions, suggestions, or ideas for how to trace the lineage of these creatures. This, we have done.”

Dietrich tapped the tabletop three times in quick succession with an index finger, then cleared his throat. “We were also instructed not to provide your Council with the full scope of intelligence the Grendier operatives have gathered over the last week. Our Council’s reasoning was twofold. First, they did not want us to color your view of these new creatures and leave you grasping at straws, offering extraneous guidance based on what you may assume we would want to hear. The second reason for this was…der mist.”

The man grimaced. His sister fixed him with a much gentler gaze this time, which seemed to be the only way she knew how to comfort him without close physical contact.

After listening to them both talk to the Havalons and interact with each other, Halsey had a feeling physical contact wasn’t one of the Grendier family’s top methods of comforting each other. Though the siblings were clearly experiencing tension, Halsey focused on forcing herself not to smile.

Guess my knowledge of cursing in German came in handy eventually. He’s pissed. And that means these people are finally getting serious about what they came here to say.

She felt Seamus watching her again, but she didn’t dare look up at him for fear of bursting out laughing at what was the absolutely wrong moment.

Finally, Dietrich seemed to get ahold of himself and continue this unexpected confession. “Our Council’s second reason for ordering this was that they did not wish the Havalon Clan to receive the full scope of our acquired knowledge and intelligence, only to use it of your own accord in any future attempts to combat these beasts. Without first alerting the Grendier Clan to your intentions and requesting a similar boon of us for whatever aid we may be able to provide in such endeavors.”

He let the words hang over the table. It was impossible to tell whether the Havalon Council members were merely shocked to silence or if they were having difficulty understanding the full meaning.

Alvara clearly assumed it was the latter because she rolled her shoulders back and nodded in support of her brother’s confession before offering more explanation. “The Grendier Council does not wish you to fight these monsters on your own because they are under the impression that the Havalon militia is undertrained and under-resourced for taking on an unidentified creature of such…frustrating mystery. Which is why they ordered us only to share with you the most—”

“Thank ye, Alvara,” Fiona replied for the entire Council. “Nae need ta explain yerselves any further. We understand the implications.”

The Grendier woman clamped her mouth shut and nodded.

Halsey couldn’t have guessed what any potential dispute between the Havalon and the Grendier Clans might have been.
